TVNZ ratings focus responsible for Henry debacle

TVNZ ratings focus responsible for Henry debacle

TVNZ should look its soon to be dumped Charter for guidance in its review of its news and current affairs editorial policies, Green Party broadcasting spokesperson Sue Kedgley said today.

TVNZ Chief Executive Rick Ellis has requested TVNZ News and Current Affairs management review their editorial policies and look into a presenter code of conduct. The review is in the wake of comments made by former Breakfast host Paul Henry who last night resigned after a week of negative publicity for the state broadcaster.

“The Paul Henry debacle has undermined the credibility of TVNZ, and exposed the folly of requiring the state broadcaster to abandon its public service mandate, to focus on chasing ratings,” said Ms Kedgley.

“The Charter makes it absolutely clear that news and current affairs programmes must be impartial, balanced, and objective.

“New Zealanders expect a company that brands itself as 'Our Nation, Our Voice' to provide impartial and responsible broadcasting, particularly from their news and current affairs programmes.”

Ms Kedgley also pointed out that those working in TVNZ still don’t seem to understand that they are working for all New Zealanders.

“TVNZ is a state owned broadcaster and Paul Henry was an employee of TVNZ. TVNZ is required to be publicly accountable for its actions, whether it likes it or not.

“The public has a right to know what sort of golden handshake has been paid out to Mr Henry,” said Ms Kedgley.
