“I was both shocked and saddened by the news of Sir Archie Te Atawhai Taiaroa’s passing. He was a great man, well respected within Maoridom who had great empathy for all New Zealanders. We all mourn his loss today,” Parekura Horomia said.

“I worked personally with Sir Archie over many years, whether we were on the pae together or sitting around a negotiating table, Sir Archie had a presence of character like no other.

“Today we mourn the loss of a great Maori leader, a dignified man, an honest man, a man of his people.

“Our thoughts are with his whänau, his iwi and his hapü during this sad time.
