Parliament Open Day confirmed for 7 November 2010

Parliament will hold an Open Day for the public on Sunday, 7 November 2010, the Speaker, Dr The Rt Hon Lockwood Smith, has announced..

The Open Day is a great opportunity for the public to learn more about Parliament and how it works, the Speaker said.

“Areas that are normally closed off to the public will be open to visitors, “he said.

Parliamentary Service Project Manager for Open Day, Chris Tracey, said the Open Day will follow a theme of “Then and Now.”

“There will be displays showing the historical operations of Parliament and today’s use of modern technology,” she said. “There will certainly be something for everyone.”

On the Open Day people will be able to visit the Debating Chamber, the Grand Hall and historic Legislative Council Chamber. They will also be able to visit an MP’s office and Beehive Theatrette where the Prime Minister’s media briefings are held.

Visitors can also test their knowledge about Parliament with a quick quiz.

For children there will be activities, competitions, a quiz, the chance to dress up and sit on a replica Speaker’s chair, and to try out Parliament’s interactive website.

Food will also be available through Parliament’s café.

Entry will be free. Visitors will be admitted from 10 a.m. with last entry at 3.30 p.m.
