Parata: ‘Ready to run a strong campaign’
Mana-based National List MP Hekia Parata says she is immensely proud to be confirmed as the National Party’s candidate
in the upcoming Mana by-election.
“Mana has been a safe Labour seat and I acknowledge the challenge ahead of my team. However, I’m ready to run a strong
campaign that focuses on the issues that matter to the people of Mana.
“I have a sound record of bringing energy, action, and voice to the interests of everyone who lives and works here. I
want the best for Mana’s people and its businesses.”
Prior to entering Parliament in 2008, Ms Parata combined highly successful careers in the New Zealand public service and
in business with husband and partner Sir Wira Gardiner.
Together they built a consultancy practice in public policy, negotiation, and education and an export manuka honey
company.
Hekia grew up in a large family in Ruatoria, which was a community constantly challenged by issues of educational
quality, accessibility to good health and housing as well as training and employment opportunities.
“The area is rich in strong families, cultural identity, and language. The community is hard working, and highly
aspirational.
“I have found these same elements in Mana and I am very comfortable working with these diverse communities to help
fulfil the dreams. Everyone wants something better for their future and for their children’s futures.
“I come from a family which understands the importance of education. Now, as a mother, I am focused on ensuring that my
daughters have good health, an excellent education, and a set of values that will guide them well as proud New Zealand
citizens of the world.
“I want the same opportunities for all the people of Mana.”
Ms Parata purchased property in Titahi Bay in 2006, and became the National List MP based in Mana in 2008. Over that
time she has worked with a range of groups on a number of projects promoting their causes and helping them gain access
to Government.
She has been a strong advocate for Transmission Gully; in 2009 she and Sir Wira helped raise more than $70,000 for the
Samoa Tsunami relief effort; and in 2010 Ms Parata helped establish the Porirua Youth Awards raising funds of $35,000 to
recognise young people excelling in art and culture, education, community and the environment, and sport.
Ms Parata established a permanent office in Mana about a year ago, holds weekly constituency clinics, and runs a weekly
programme of visits throughout the electorate.
“Mana is a great network of communities with their own distinctive characters, and a strong and caring spirit. I’m
honoured to be confirmed as the National Party candidate at the upcoming by-election.”
