90 Day Trial Legislation Fails To Create Jobs

John Key’s 90 day trial legislation has failed to create jobs, Labour’s Labour Relations spokesperson Trevor Mallard said today.

“The Department of Labour report released by John Key at the National Party conference last week was used to justify the move to extend the 90 trial legislation,” said Trevor Mallard.

“John Key tried to convince New Zealanders that the 90 day trial legislation was a remedy to unemployment and a guaranteed way to grow our economy. He was clearly wrong.

“The devil is in the detail. The report says that “it cannot be stated categorically that trial periods had created extra job opportunities.

“The report goes on to say that it is unclear what kind of impact the 90 day legislation has had on employment and that ‘While employers acknowledged that trial periods could give a chance to disadvantaged job seekers, very few of them used trial periods specifically for this purpose, being focused on hiring the most suitable candidate’.

“The 90 day trial legislation is also failing to help our most vulnerable workers into jobs. Only 14% of employees hired as a result of the legislation were Maori and only 6% were Pacific Islander, proving that the legislation was not helping those on the margins of the labour market.

“John Keys move to extend the 90 day trial legislation was purely political, driven by ideology – and not by sound, factual information.

“All these changes will do is strip away workers basic rights. Nothing else,” said Trevor Mallard
