Labour mourns the loss of Lady Mahuta

Waikato taniwharau, he piko he taniwha, he piko he taniwha
Haere atu ra e hine i nga kapua e rere ki tua
Ki Hawaiki nui, Hawaiki roa, Hawaiki pamamoa
Te hono i Wairua
Paimarie.

Labour’s Maori Caucus members expressed their sorrow at the passing of Lady Raiha Mahuta today.

A Kingitanga leader in her own right, she was one of Tainui's co-negotiators for its Waikato river settlement, the chair of the Waikato Endowed College Trust (a project begun by her late husband Sir Robert Mahuta) and the Kaahui Ariki (Royal House) representative on the Tainui executive.

“Lady Raiha was aspirational for Tainui, for her people and often spoke of Tainui’s bright future.

"Her passing is a great loss, and she will be missed.

"Our thoughts are with Tainui, Ngati Manu, our colleague Nanaia and all of the Mahuta whänau during this time.
