Red Bag Day Highlights Shameful Pay Inequality
Red Bag Day is something that all Kiwis should be supportive of says Charles Chauvel, Labour List MP based in the Ohariu electorate.
"For pay to still be unequal between genders for the same work, after 36 years of equal rights legislation is shameful"
Chauvel supports equal pay for the same job, regardless of gender. "This government tells us that if you're female, you shouldn't expect to be paid as much as your male counterpart. By ignoring the nearly 20,000 signatures last year calling for equal pay regardless of gender, this government displays their contempt for equality."
The current government disbanded the Pay Equity Unit which was investigating the causes behind the gender pay gap, resulting in protests around the country in June 2009.
"Regardless of your occupation, all females should insist they are paid the same as their colleagues" says Chauvel.
Chauvel joined several MPs at Parliament today to show their support.
