World Disability Day celebrated in style and action
Every year on 3 December we celebrate World Disability Day, and this year’s celebrations were a fitting acknowledgment of all disabled New Zealanders, Labour’s Disability spokesperson Lynne Pillay says.
“World Disability Day is about acknowledging and celebrating the contribution that people with disabilities make throughout the world,” said Lynne Pillay.
“It was appropriate that on World Disability Day the Special Olympics National Summer Games in Palmerston North kicked off. A great day with more than 1000 athletes competing fiercely in some pretty fierce weather conditions,” says Lynne Pillay.
“And a partnership between iCan and the Yes Disability Resource Centre showed that people with disabilities are not focussed solely on their own issues on World Disability Day, with the organisations collecting cans of food for the Auckland City Mission.
“When I delivered my cans, they had hit 460 with more cans coming. Not bad for a morning’s work,” said Lynne Pillay.
“To top the day off in style, was the Gala event of the 2009 Attitude Awards.
“As always, people glammed up for the occasion and it was a very positive, fun and entertaining evening and everyone was blown away by the talent of the participants.
“I warmly congratulate Attitude TV, all the finalists and award winners and acknowledge how extraordinary they are. They all contribute in so many ways to our communities and I thank them for all that they do,” says Lynne Pillay.
“For me, the most memorable line from the evening was ‘it’s what I can do, not what I can’t do that makes me the person I am’.
“It’s all about Attitude,” says Lynne Pillay.
