Dunne calls on City Council to defer Johnsonville change by 12 months
UnitedFuture leader and Ohariu MP Peter Dunne is calling on the Wellington City Council to defer consideration of its controversial district plan change for central Johnsonville for 12 months.
Submissions on the proposal which would allow medium density housing of up to three stories in central Johnsonville, and could, according to Council admissions increase the suburb’s current population by a third, close this Friday, 27 November.
“Many people I’ve spoken to are not aware of the proposal, let alone its potential impact,”Mr Dunne said.
“There is strong concern that, if implemented, the plan change will change the character of Johnsonville forever, and there is a strong sense that the Council is not listening to residents’ concerns.”
Mr Dunne said he understands public hearings on the proposal are unlikely before May next year.
“So, why the hurry now to close submissions so quickly?
“A better course would surely be for the Council to defer the proposal for 12 months, so local people can have their say at the local body election, due in October next year.”
