Pay Equity Questions Unanswered

National MPs have still not explained why they refused to hear submissions about pay equity for school support staff and social workers, Labour’s Women’s Affairs spokesperson Sue Moroney said.

“On the eve of Work for Free Day, the 15,808 people who signed my petition on pay equity are none the wiser about why the Government shut down select committee examination of the decision to axe pay equity investigations for school support staff and social workers,” said petitioner, Sue Moroney.

“Work for Free Day recognises the day on which women work for ‘free’ on average for the rest of the year, due to the 12 % gender pay gap.

“The select committee still hasn’t even informed me of its decision on the petition.

“I gave the Government in Parliament today two opportunities to explain why it shut scrutiny of the issue down, but no answer was forthcoming.

“They know that decision was wrong and won’t stand up to scrutiny,” said Sue Moroney.
