Six months Paid Parental Leave on the Agenda
Investing in building strong families is one of the most valuable things that Governments can do, which is why Labour Women’s Affairs spokesperson Sue Moroney has drafted a Bill seeking an extension to Paid Parental Leave
“Extending PPL allows parents to bond with their new babies, supports breast-feeding for 6 months and helps families to focus on their needs during those precious early months,” Sue Moroney says.
“New Zealand currently has 14 weeks PPL, brought in by the Labour Government.
“However, other countries have much longer leave periods and Australia will move to 18 weeks PPL in 2011.
Sue Moroney said her Bill recognised the current economic situation, and allowed a clear pathway forward so that both families and workplaces could have certainty on this important issue.
The Bill proposes to move to 18 weeks paid parental leave on January 1, 2011, then 22 weeks on January 1, 2012; and finally 26 weeks (six months) on January 1 2013.
Based on 2008/09 figures, it would cost $40m additional funding in each phase.
My members' bill during my first term in Parliament (2005) became law (meal breaks and rest periods) and I now want to improve the work/life balance of New Zealand families further with this bill which I hope will be supported across all political parties in Parliament.
“I Hope my Bill to extend Paid Parental Leave will drawn from today’s Ballot,” Sue Moroney said.
