UnitedFuture leader Peter Dunne today announced that former UnitedFuture MP and the current party president Judy Turner will represent the party in next month’s Mt Albert by-election.
“Mrs Turner is an outstanding candidate and with two terms in Parliament behind her, offers more Parliamentary experience than the other candidates combined,” he said.
“Mt Albert has a large base of families, and Mrs Turner and UnitedFuture offer strong advocacy and representation for those families with a party that is in government.”
Mrs Turner said she was delighted to have won UnitedFuture’s Mt Albert nomination and would offer a real alternative to the electorate’s voters.
“There is an incredibly arrogant belief among the two major parties that this is just about going down party lines and a two horse race. The problem with that is where does it leave the people of Mt Albert and there very real needs?
“They must be getting sick of being treated like a political football. They need real and committed representation dealing with the issues that concern them. I offer them that,” Mrs Turner said.
“I operated an Auckland office for the last three years and offer the chance for Mt Albert voters to have an MP committed to meeting their particular needs.”
She said yesterday’s Government announcement on the planned Waterview motorway was a practical option, and would provide certainty to the local population.
“Although it has taken way too long to sort matters out, the decision has been made and it’s time to get on with it,”Mrs Turner said.
She said it would be important that those who lose their homes to the process are supported.
“It’s not just a matter of buying up houses. Everyone can sympathise with the dislocation that people would go through, and the very real distress for some, particularly the elderly.
“There needs to be support put in place to help them through this time at a social level, not just financial compensation,”she said.
