Speaker of the House and Alexandra Lang to marry
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Hon Dr Lockwood Smith, has announced his engagement to Alexandra Lang, Counsellor at Otamatea High School, near Dr Smith’s farm in Northland.
The couple plan to marry mid-way through the year, on the first Saturday of the July school holidays.
The ceremony will take place at Parliament.
Dr Smith, who has never married, said he was delighted Alexandra had accepted his proposal made on Christmas Day. Alexandra said she was taken completely by surprise. “I was absolutely thrilled,” she said.
Alexandra Lang, who has four adult children from a previous marriage, and Dr Smith intend to live at the Speaker’s farm at Matakohe.
Alexandra and Lockwood first met in 1970 while attending Massey University in Palmerston North. The couple have been together again since 1999.
