Students get 23 percent of tertiary funding

Hon Pete Hodgson
Minister for Tertiary Education

14 October 2008 Media Release
Students get 23 percent of tertiary funding

Tertiary Education Minister Pete Hodgson said today that recent comments in the media that 42 percent of tertiary funding goes to students is misleading.

“That figure of 42 percent includes student loans. But student loans are just that, loans. They need to be repaid by students once they graduate and begin earning. A lot of the student loan borrowing is for fees. After adjusting for borrowing for fees, the figure is 23 percent,” he said.
