Nats underline law & order plans with latest billboard

National Party Leader John Key says National's commitment to getting tough on crime is highlighted in its latest billboard, launched today in Christchurch.

"Law and order is a major area of focus for National this election campaign. It is one of the core issues that matter to New Zealanders.

"Labour has had nine years to sort out our criminal justice issues, and has very little to show for it. New Zealanders are sick of seeing headline after headline on a succession of violent crimes.

"It is not good enough that many people feel unsafe on the streets, let alone in their own homes. I am determined that the next National Government will improve the safety and security in our communities.

"National intends to crack down on criminal gangs and their insidious 'P' trade, which is causing so much harm to our society.

"National will also be strengthening bail, sentencing, and parole laws as a priority, and giving police greater powers to do their job.

"We have already released detailed policies on youth justice, criminal gangs, and help for the victims of crime. We will release further policies in this area in the run-up to the election.

"The billboard I am launching today underscores our commitment to getting on and improving the safety and security of our communities.

"National has now unveiled six billboards on issues that it believes matter to New Zealand - immigration and tax, education, putting more into frontline public services, and infrastructure.

"National intends to be resolutely focused on what matters right through the election campaign."
