Marie Shroff reappointed Privacy Commissioner

Associate Minister of Justice, Hon Lianne Dalziel, today announced the reappointment of Marie Shroff as the Privacy Commissioner for a five year term.

Marie Shroff’s first term of appointment expires later this month.

The Privacy Commissioner is an independent Crown entity established under section 12 of the Privacy Act 1993. The role of the Commissioner is to promote and protect individual privacy. Principal functions include to investigate and conciliate complaints, to issue codes of practice, to monitor information matching, and to advise and report on privacy matters.

Lianne Dalziel welcomed Marie Shroff’s reappointment saying that she has been highly effective in improving the service delivery of the Office of Privacy Commissioner.

"Marie Shroff has strategic leadership skills and broad experience across a range of policy areas. Her reappointment will ensure the on-going effectiveness of the Office. I am delighted that the appointment to this important post has the support of the Opposition."

During the early part of her career, Marie Shroff worked with the Department of External Affairs, the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation, as a teacher in Western Samoa, and with the New Zealand Consulate General in New York. In 1978 she was appointed to the State Services Commission and held the positions of Director of Policy and Director of the State Enterprises Branch. In 1987 she was appointed as Secretary of the Cabinet and Clerk of the Executive Council. Marie Shroff served in that position until September 2003 at which time she was appointed to the role of Privacy Commissioner.
