ETS Should Be Dumped - Not Recycled
Rodney Hide MP
Monday, June 16 2008
ACT Leader Rodney Hide today labelled the Emissions Trading Scheme tabled in Parliament a costly mistake that will costs jobs and undermine New Zealand's standard of living.
"New Zealanders are already reeling from increased costs. The ETS will skyrocket those costs even higher. It will cost jobs and undermine New Zealand's standard of living for no gain whatsoever other than that 'we will be leading the world'," Mr Hide said.
"The Government's soothing words about the costs of the scheme are propaganda. The cost of greenhouse gas emissions - that means the cost of everything - has to go sky high to achieve Labour's goal of carbon neutrality, or National's goal of halving emissions by 2050.
“It's wrong of National Party to complain about the costs of the present ETS when their stated goal of halving emissions by 2050 would put massive costs on to every New Zealander.
"We should not lead the world in the scam market for hot air. It's doubtful anyone will follow us. ACT rejects the ETS outright as a costly mistake of zero environmental benefit," Mr Hide said.
