National welcomes Green Acres probe
National MPs Pansy Wong and Chester Borrows today welcomed news that the alleged Green Acres fraud case is to be investigated by the authorities.
“We welcome the fact that the Serious Fraud Office is investigating this alleged scam, despite the slow start when the case broke last month,” says Mrs Wong, National’s Ethnic Affairs spokeswoman.
National’s Police spokesman, Chester Borrows, says that in December when the case arose, he had concerns that the authorities were not taking the complainants seriously.
“It is good to see that finally the Serious Fraud Office is investigating, and I would expect them to carry out their inquiry as quickly as they can.”
Mrs Wong says she has received daily calls from victims about the alleged scam.
“I have an eight page petition from the group affected by the alleged fraud.
“The petition appeals for the authorities to put every effort into investigating this awful case, which has hit vulnerable immigrants, in particular, badly.
“Time is of the essence in order for the victims to recover the money they have lost. I hope the authorities treat the investigation with the urgency it deserves.”
