Edwin Paul appointed District Court Judge
Edwin Peraniko Paul, Solicitor of Auckland, has been appointed a District Court Judge, Attorney-General Michael Cullen announced today.
Mr Paul was admitted to the bar in 1988. He started work in Whakatane for the firm Hamertons and then worked for various firms in Auckland including the Grey Lynn Neighbourhood Law Office. He became a sole practitioner in Whakatane in 1994. This was a general practice and covered the full range of work from Duty Solicitor to homicide and other serious crime. Mr Paul also undertook Youth Court work and was Counsel for the Child.
In 2004 Mr Paul was appointed Deputy Public Defender for the Public Defence Service at Manukau City. Since that time he has practiced solely in the criminal jurisdiction in both the Manukau District Court and the High Court at Auckland. Mr Paul has served on the New Zealand Criminal Bar Association and been a member of the Maori Law Society.
Mr Paul’s iwi affiliations in the Bay of Plenty are Ngati Awa and Ngati Manawa.
He will be sworn in on 1 February 2008 at Whakatane and will sit in Auckland.
