Tainui MP Nanaia Mahuta is praising the award
winning effort of the popular reality show, Marae
DIY.
Maori Television’s renovation and landscaping show recently won a prestigious Qantas Award for Best Reality format.
“It’s a great achievement, not only for Maori TV, but for Maaori right across the country. When you get the kind of recognition that has been given to Marae DIY, you know you’re on the right path,” said Nanaia Mahuta.
The show, which rewards iwi with a much needed makeover, took out the award for its Manutuke Marae, Gisborne episode. It also staved off the strong challenge of two other popular shows, the grand final of NZ Idol and Police Ten 7.
“It’s fantastic to know that a show that is put together by Maaori, for Maaori and can capture a wider community in the way that it has, is getting the kudos it richly deserves. It’s the kind of show that brings Maaori together from around the country. I like the feeling of community that it projects, and the fact it gives Maaori and opportunity to tell the world their history, culture and stories.
Nanaia Mahuta said the success of Marae DIY was an example of the success of the government’s broadcasting objectives.
“A key aim of the government’s broadcasting policies is the delivery of high quality and accessible local content, because we know how important this is for Aotearoa/New Zealand,” said Nanaia Mahuta.
“The success of DIY reflects what can be provided by the diverse communities that make up our society, and offers encouragement for others to set their sights high. I congratulate Marae DIY and hope that they continue to set the standard for the future.”
