White Ribbon day – let’s end the violence

National Party Woman’s Affairs spokeswoman Jackie Blue is urging all New Zealanders to get behind White Ribbon day today, which marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

“It is an opportunity for us to show our absolute abhorrence for violence of any sort against women and children.

“The sad fact is that domestic violence is a 24/7 problem and endemic in our society and we know that we are only seeing the tip of the violence iceberg.”

Dr Blue says today’s also an opportunity to reflect on statistics showing that under Labour, protection orders have declined by more than a quarter, which is in contrast to the climbing violence stats, a trend which National has been highlighting for the past two years.

“John Key’s recent policy announcement of giving Police the power to issue temporary, on-the-spot domestic violence protection orders sets in motion a process that will make women safer. It has been well received by women’s groups.

“Zero tolerance to violence against women and children isn’t exclusive to just this Sunday – it must extend right throughout the year.”
