Future NZ backs marriage
Independent MP Gordon Copeland today reported that his new party, Future New Zealand, will have a deep commitment to marriage and family.
"This reflects and is in agreement with the position of the United Nations," said Mr Copeland.
"Today is UN day and marks the 62nd anniversary of the United Nations charter which was entered into on the 24th of October 1945. Just over three years later, on December 10 1948, via the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the United Nations signaled its commitment to marriage and the family."
"Future New Zealand has adopted a similar commitment. We believe that the family or whänau is the living cell of society. It is the most socially and economically effective way to care for, teach, and encourage children."
"Likewise, in line with all the available international evidence, we believe that marriage is the best and most deliberate way of starting a new family. It should therefore be recognised and promoted by Government."
"Marriage is not perfect but it is still, on average, the best environment for both the spouses and their children. It will therefore remain a policy priority for Future New Zealand."
