Social Workers Celebrated for Making a Difference

Child, Youth and Family Services Minister Ruth Dyson, says today’s National Social Workers’ Day is an opportunity for New Zealanders to acknowledge and celebrate the difference that social workers make to the lives of thousands of families, children and young people.

“Social workers undertake challenging and complex work, and they show real commitment and professionalism in carrying out their jobs,” says Ruth Dyson.

“Within CYFS they work with families to keep children and young people safe where there are concerns about their wellbeing, and they work with young people who have committed offences. They also work with communities to raise awareness of child abuse, how to recognise it and how to report it, and they support caregivers.

“Over the past year, CYFS’ merger with the Ministry of Social Development has allowed social workers to call on a wider pool of services and support to assist the people they are working with.

“Around the country, CYFS offices are holding morning teas to celebrate the work of our social workers and all the staff who support them.

“I am very proud of our social workers and inspired by the passion they show every day in the work that they do.”
