Dunne: Parliament has taken a decisive step
UnitedFuture leader Peter Dunne says he's delighted that Parliament today agreed to the introduction of his Member's Bill, the Land Transport (Driver Licensing) Amendment Bill, which seeks to raise the minimum driving age to from 15 to 16.
In an unprecedented Parliamentary move, Mr Dunne sought leave from the House during Question Time and not a single Member spoke out against it.
"As the Leader of the House, Dr Michael Cullen, has pointed out, because I am a Minister, the Bill becomes a Government Bill and I am assured it will be debated speedily by the House and sent to a select committee for detailed consideration.
"While I agree that simply raising the driving age won't stop the all-too-frequent deaths of young drivers on our roads, this move will become part of our sustained efforts to protect young people."
Mr Dunne pointed to a recent newspaper poll which showed 87% of respondents agreed with raising the driving age.
