EMISSIONS TRADING – what is happening?


The government is engaging with the public, stakeholders and Māori on the proposal for a New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme (NZ ETS). This engagement will initially lead to the introduction of legislation into Parliament, but will be a long-term process, as sectors enter the NZ ETS and it is refined and implemented.


EMISSIONS TRADING ENGAGEMENT IN OCTOBER 2007

Cross-sector emissions trading workshops

Date Location
1 and 2 October Westpac Stadium, Wellington
4 and 5 October Chateau on the Park, Christchurch
8 and 9 October Aotea Centre, Auckland

The emissions trading workshops are 2-day events. You can attend both days or just one.

Day 1 will focus on the generic elements of the emissions trading scheme. Sessions will be held on:
• Climate change policy and the context for emissions trading
• The rationale and objective of the NZ ETS
• Core design features of the NZ ETS
• Transitional assistance

Day 2 will focus on the sectors participating in the NZ ETS:
• Forestry and agriculture
• Stationary energy and industrial processes
• Liquid fossil fuels (primarily transport)

Regional forestry public meetings

These regional meetings will build on Day 2 of the Cross-sector emissions trading workshops, on forestry and agriculture. The regional meetings will focus specifically on forestry, including the detail of how forestry will be included in the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme, and its place in the Sustainable Land Management and Climate Change Plan of Action.

These meetings will be of interest to foresters, business advisers, and farmers with an interest in forestry.

Other meetings

Officials intend to meet with NZ ETS participants directly or in small groups, and where possible will meet with groups on request.
