Dunne questions A-G's recommendation

United Future leader Peter Dunne today called on Parliament to tell the Auditor-General to stick to his job of checking the Government's books and not recommend witchhunts among the public service, in the manner of the late Senator Joe McCarthy.

This follows a report from the Auditor-General's office recommending that government departments hold 'conflict of interest' registers detailing public servants' political and private arrangements.

Mr Dunne asked Speaker Margaret Wilson to convene the Parliamentary Officers' Committee, to which the Auditor-General reports, to tell the Auditor General his job is to audit the Government's books, not be the new Senator McCarthy.

The Speaker said she would take the matter under review.
