Turner: Onus on ‘Schoolies’ to prove doubters wrong

United Future’s Bay of Plenty MP Judy Turner says the onus is on event organisers to prove the doubters wrong by strictly managing two school-leavers parties in December.

‘Schoolies’, which has become very popular in Australia, is a four day ‘monster’ party for departing school students over the age of 18. The two venues are Mt Manganui and Wanaka in mid to late December.

“I am aware that many within the local Mt Manganui community do not wish to see the event go ahead,” said Mrs Turner, “which is understandable considering the reputation of New Years Eve parties that have taken place in recent years.”

“The event organisers must ensure that good organisation and tight security are in place to provide a high degree of public safety.”

“It is important that those running the event consult widely with the local community; including shop-owners, bar-owners, residents and police, to take into consideration their concerns.”

“I can only assume that the organisers will have insurance for any property damage caused during the event.”

“Those that attend ‘Schoolies’ need to be aware of strict rules surrounding the consumption of alcohol and behavioural expectations of the local community. The responsibility to get that message across lies squarely at the feet of the organisers.”

“While we must recognise that these school leavers are young adults and are entitled to make their own choices organisers must be aware that the onus is on them to look after community concerns first and foremost. If not then New Zealand’s first ‘Schoolies’ events may well be the last,” concluded Mrs Turner.
