Dunne warns against tit-for-tat response to Fiji

United Future leader Peter Dunne says a measured response is needed regarding the expulsion of New Zealand’s High Commissioner from Fiji.

“It is regretful to hear that the Fijian military government has deemed it necessary to eject our official representative, Michael Green from Fiji,” says Mr Dunne.

“Despite the political situation between the two countries, it must be remembered that there are many Fijians living in New Zealand, and many New Zealanders living or holidaying in Fiji.

“There is a natural cultural and geographical bond between New Zealand and Fiji, which deserves to be reflected through a cooperative political relationship.

“I hope that our Government does not feel the need to engage in a tit-for-tat response. The Fijian High Commissioner must be allowed to remain in Wellington to help re-establish a constructive relationship with Fiji,” says Mr Dunne.
