Dunne warns Key against being Brash
United Future leader Peter Dunne is warning National leader John Key not to fall into the same trap as former National leader Don Brash.
Mr Dunne was responding to Mr Key’s reported statements that National could win the next election by a “landslide”, capturing over 50% of the vote to govern alone.
“I hope Mr Key is not falling into the same trap as his predecessor, in thinking that National can go it alone and be able to govern without a support party. We saw where failing to build relationships with smaller parties got National last election – the benches to the left of the Speaker’s chair,” said Mr Dunne.
“To be predicting a landslide result more than a year out from an election seems to be counting chickens a little prematurely – and taking voters a little for granted.
“For all its faults, Labour has been far savvier than National in cultivating relationships, which is why with the support of parties like United Future it has been able to run a stable and reliable government over the years.
“My advice to Mr Key is simple. Don’t start thinking you can go it alone and succeed in ’08. Don’t be Brash."
