Joel George will not seek reappointment

The Speaker, Hon Margaret Wilson, said today that Joel George, General Manager, Parliamentary Service, had advised her he would not seek reappointment when his appointment expired in nine months.

Mr George had however agreed to stay on until a new permanent appointee took office.

Ms Wilson said she was very appreciative of this offer which would enable the State Services Commission to start the process to appoint his successor well in advance of the next election.

Parliamentary Service provided administrative and support services to the House and to Members of Parliament. It employed more than 600 people within the Parliamentary complex and in out-of-Parliament offices.

During his time as General Manager, Mr George had overseen a major review of the governance, structures, processes and procedures relating to the administrative services in support of Parliament.

‘This is now moving into the implementation phase and Joel rightfully judges this to be a good time to hand over,’ Ms Wilson said.

‘I understand his decision and would like to place on record my support for the contribution he has made to Parliament and those who work here, whether they be Members or staff.

‘Joel has carried out his role in a calm and dignified manner, in what can be a difficult and demanding environment. We all enjoy the benefits of his tenure ranging from major refurbishments of the Executive Wing and Bowen House to improved visitor services.

‘In addition, Joel has encouraged closer collaboration between Parliamentary Service and the Office of the Clerk over projects such as the new website and plans to televise Parliament.’

State Services Commissioner Dr Mark Prebble had been asked to assist with the administrative aspects of the appointment process. The appointment would be made by a committee chaired by the Speaker, in accordance with the Parliamentary Service Act 2000.

The position would be advertised shortly, and it was anticipated that the appointee would be in place before the end of the year.
