Turner: Students still treated as Children

“Students are adults and should be treated as adults in all areas – including eligibility to student allowances.

That was United Future Education Spokesperson Judy Turner MP’s response to the student support announcement from Budget 2007 today.

“It defies logic that once again, there is no reduction in the age of eligibility for student allowances.

While United Future welcomes increased parental income thresholds and the CPI adjustments for personal income threshold abatements, we consider both to be long overdue and a reflection of the current strong economic situation, rather than an example of the Government’s magnificence.

“We are disappointed that students continue to be treated as children by this Government.”

United Future will work to fulfil the Confidence and Supply Agreement with the Labour-led government to see lowering of the age of eligibility to a student allowance.

“Students can rely on United Future to fight for them. More students will be able to access student allowances. We will reduce the age of eligibility to student allowances, said Mrs Turner.
