Monetary policy more important than political point scoring

United Future finance spokesperson Gordon Copeland today expressed his disappointment at the National Party’s attitude to the Finance and Expenditure committee’s inquiry into monetary policy.

“Given the central importance of this issue to New Zealand’s economic prosperity, I had hoped, almost against hope, that National might be prepared to put aside partisan points scoring for the sake of our nation’s future,” said Mr Copeland.

“I know of course that it’s difficult to take the politics out of politics.

"However monetary policy is one of just a handful of issues which needs to transcend political differences. Regardless of the government of the day, we must have the very best possible range of policy instruments to put New Zealand on the pathway to strong economic growth coupled with low inflation.

“I’ll continue to hope that the results of the inquiry will make a positive contribution towards those goals.”
