Peters offers condolences after plane crash

Foreign Minister Winston Peters has offered his condolences to the families of victims of this afternoon's Garuda Airlines crash at Yogjakarta airport in Indonesia.

"While details of the crash are still emerging, it is clear that a significant number of the passengers have been killed or seriously injured," Mr Peters said.

"The New Zealand government offers its deepest sympathies to all those who have lost family members or friends on the flight.

"At this early stage there are no reports of any New Zealanders being on the flight, but foreign affairs officials are continuing to monitor the situation closely and are checking with Indonesian authorities and airlines staff to confirm that this information was correct," Mr Peters said.
