Dunne still backs NZ Day

United Future leader Peter Dunne says he's not disheartened by Parliament's justice select committee's rejection of his New Zealand Day Bill.

"I welcome the advice from the committee that many of the submitters were in favour of retaining Waitangi Day and having another day set aside for a national day that will celebrate everything that's good about New Zealand and being a New Zealander.

"I intend to continue work on having a national day adopted and will be consulting widely on what could be a suitable day.

"One suggestion already made is that the day set aside for Queen's Birthday could become New Zealand Day," said Mr Dunne.
