Police Association backs ban on hand-held cellphones
News that the Police Association magazine supports a ban on using a cellphone while driving was encouraging, United Future transport spokesperson Gordon Copeland said today.
The January/February 2007 edition of "Police News" warns of the greater dangers associated with driving while using a hand-held cellphone. Like Mr Copeland, the magazine also supports the use of "hands-free" cellphone devices.
"I firmly believe that talking or texting on a cellphone while driving is risky behaviour. As "Police News" notes, your chances of being involved in a road crash are four times higher if you use a cellphone while driving.
"I call upon the Minister of Transport Safety and his colleagues to take heed of the views of the Police Association and work to ban the use of cellphones while driving," said Mr Copeland.
"It's another step we can take to improve transport safety."
