Royal reappointed to the Maori Heritage Council
Dr Te Ahukaramu Charles Royal has been reappointed to the Maori Heritage Council of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

The Associate Arts Culture and Heritage Minister Judith Tizard today announced the reappointment of Dr Te Ahukaramu Charles Royal to the Maori Heritage Council of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.
Dr Te Ahukaramu Charles Royal, of Ngati Raukawa, Ngati Tamatera and Nga Puhi, is currently director of Mauriora-ki-te-Ao/ Living Universe Ltd.
His research interests are in indigenous knowledge (including matauranga Maori) and indigenous performing arts (including te whare tapere).
"I warmly welcome Dr Royal's continuing contribution to the Maori Heritage Council," says Judith Tizard.
"His knowledge and experience in Maori heritage and conservation issues add considerable value to the Council."
His appointment ends on 30 November 2009.
Background
The Maori Heritage Council was established under section 84(1) of the Historic Places Act 1993 to ensure that in the protection of wahi tapu, wahi tapu areas, historic places and historic areas of Maori interest, the New Zealand Historic Places Trust (NZHPT) meets the needs of Maori in a culturally sensitive manner.
The Council assists iwi to develop programmes for identification and conservation of these areas.
