Parliament's worst behaved MPs for 2006


Ohariu-Belmont MP, Peter Dunne, today released his annual list of Parliament's worst-behaved MPs for the current year.

"The winner by a country mile this year is National's Nelson MP, Dr Nick Smith, who is consistently among the worst-behaved MP's," he said.

The ranking system is based on 1 point for being asked by the Speaker to withdraw and apologise and 3 points for being thrown out of the House.

The full list is:

1. Hon Dr Nick Smith (6 withdraw & apologise; 5 expulsions) (Not placed in 2005, 1st in 2004, 3rd in 2003 and 2= in 2002)

2. Hon Tau Henare (5 withdraw & apologise; 3 expulsions)

3. Gerry Brownlee (12 withdraw & apologise) (4= in 2005, 2nd in 2004) - usually in the top group

4. Rt Hon Winston Peters (2 withdraw & apologise; 3 expulsions) (3rd in 2005; 4th in 2004; 1st in 2003; 1st in 2002) - steadily improving his behaviour over the years

5 = Hon Trevor Mallard (6 withdraw & apologise; 1 expulsion) (4= in 2005; 3rd in 2004) - not the troublemaker he used to be Hon Dover Samuels (3 withdraw & apologise; 2 expulsions) Hon Bill English (6 withdraw & apologise; 1 expulsion) David Bennett (3 withdraw & apologise; 2 expulsions) - one to watch

Notable absentees

Rodney Hide - last year's winner, now nowhere to be seen Hon Chris Carter - 2nd last year, but hardly featured this year
