Kapa Haka festival secures UN support

Maori performing arts will be launched on to the world stage like never before, thanks to next year’s Te Matatini National Kapa Haka Festival, says National’s Maori Affairs spokeswoman, Georgina te Heuheu.

It has secured the support of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation – UNESCO.

UNESCO will promote Te Matatini through its global networks and United Nations agencies as a premier cultural event on the international festival calendar.

“This is a huge step forward and the organisers of Te Matatini should be congratulated.

“UNESCO’s extraordinary support will further propel Maori performing arts and New Zealand on to the international stage.

“This is truly a job well done.”
