Trust Eden Park Trust - Can We?
New Zealand First is demanding a re-evaluation of the costs of redeveloping Eden Park.
“Given that the projected costs associated with the upgrade have increased from $60m to over $385m million and are still yet to be even finalised, the time has arrived for some deep breathing and a realistic evaluation of the project," said Leader, Rt Hon Winston Peters.
Mr Peters urged a return to the basic project and reiterated that although New Zealand First lacks confidence in the robustness of estimates to date the party still does not believe that there is a need for substantial government funding.
"That being the case there is as yet no proven need for travel or accommodation related taxes for this project. What clearly is needed is certainty about the costs, resolution of the funding issues, and some real signs that the project will proceed in timely fashion.
"As a nation we cannot afford to lose the hosting rights to the Rugby World Cup 2011. This is not a project that we can allow to go wrong," said Mr Peters.
