Immigration Act Review Findings A Step In The Right Direction
New Zealand First welcomes the outcome of the Immigration Act review with the associated recommendations for changes to our immigration law, says Associate Immigration spokesperson Peter Brown.
"New Zealand First made a review of immigration law and policy a central feature of its supply and confidence agreement with the government and today's announcement goes some way to addressing our concerns.
"There is some irony that New Zealand First has been pilloried in the past for proposing a tightening of immigration law, refining the appeals process and tightening our borders and yet this review aims to achieve these very things," said Mr Brown.
"New Zealand First has been part of the consultation process during the review and we will continue to work with the government as the associated legislation moves through the House next year.
"While other political parties have been all over the place on immigration, we have seen the consensus, as we knew it would, move to our position. While we still have some concerns about the number and type of migrants allowed into New Zealand, we do see this as a step in the right direction," concluded Mr Brown.
