Prison BBQ “offensive”

The Corrections Department has become a joke with inmates receiving all kinds of treats and prison policy being flouted constantly, says National Party Law and Order spokesman Simon Power says
 

He is commenting on media reports today that a group of inmates at Christchurch Prison, among them Mongrel Mob members and affiliates, were treated to a lavish BBQ as a reward for ‘good behaviour’.
 

“These people are in prison because they were found to be in serious breach of the law.  The victims of their crimes will be grossly offended by the idea that they are being rewarded for anything,” says Mr Power.
 

“This is the just the latest in a long line of incredibly bad decisions made by the Corrections Department over the past year and taxpayers have had enough.”
 

Also this year:

-          A group of Mangaroa Prison inmates were taken swimming at a Hawke’s Bay Beach.

-          Prisoners around the country have been provided with flat screen televisions, gaming consoles and underfloor heating.

-          A group of Invercargill Prison inmates dined on porterhouse steak, ice cream and lollies as a reward for good behaviour.

-          Prisoners have continued to have access to R-rated movies despite the Government saying it would crack down on the practice.

"Our prisons are supposed to be places of punishment and rehabilitation but under this Government they are serving those two purposes less and less," says Mr Power.
