Dave Dobbyn to perform at NZ Memorial ceremony

Singer Dave Dobbyn is to join war veterans in the official party heading to London for the dedication of the New Zealand Memorial on Armistice Day, 11 November, Prime Minister Helen Clark announced today.

He will perform at the ceremony at Hyde Park Corner, which will be attended by dignitaries from both countries, war veterans, and the extensive New Zealand community currently living and working in Britain.

The official contingent departs New Zealand by RNZAF aircraft on 5 November.

“Dave Dobbyn has been at the forefront of New Zealand music for over a quarter of a century,” Helen Clark said.

“For many New Zealanders, songs like ‘Welcome Home’, ‘Slice of Heaven’ and ‘Loyal’ are the part of the soundtrack of their lives.

“In 2001, writers and the music industry voted five of Dave Dobbyn’s songs onto the 30 best New Zealand songs list.

“We are delighted that he has agreed to perform at this important and moving day for New Zealand,” Helen Clark said.

Dave Dobbyn said he was looking forward to the dedication ceremony, and especially to meeting with veterans and their families.

“We all owe our freedom to those who served. There isn't a family in New Zealand untouched by the sacrifices made by the generations who endured wars on our behalf and with our very futures as their highest hopes.
