Hide Disappointed At Rates Bill Defeat
ACT Leader Rodney Hide is disappointed that his Bill to cap local body rates was voted down in Parliament this evening.
"It's a big blow to ratepayers up and down New Zealand", Mr Hide said.
"The issue won't go away while rates continue to spiral upwards.
"To pacify public anger, the government has today hastily announced an inquiry by press release. But there's no terms of reference, and no guarantee of any rate relief - it's just spin.
"Besides, it's not enough for MPs to just sit around and talk. Ratepayers are feeling the pain of rates hikes now.
"Parliament gives councils the power to raise rates - Parliament must make sure that power is used responsibly.
"Had my Bill been sent to Select Committee, ratepayers could have had their say.
"By voting the Bill down, New Zealand First made the decision for everyone - more rates, more government, and less accountability.
"Control over council spending should be held by the people, rather than the politicians", Mr Hide said.
