Arts Council appointments announced

Two new members have been appointed to Creative New Zealand's Arts Council the Associate Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Judith Tizard announced today.

Dr Jenny Plane Te Paa is Dean of the College of St John the Evangelist in Auckland. Dr Te Paa has governance experience on the New Zealand Lottery Youth Committee and the Auckland District Parole Board, and has been a trustee on the Aotea Centre Performing Arts Trust.

Jenny May of Christchurch is an architectural historian and senior research planner and has tutored in conservation and restoration. She has served two terms on the Board of Te Papa Tongarewa and has chaired the Te Papa National Services Advisory Group since 2001.

Both women have been appointed for three-year terms from 1 July this year to 30 June 2009.

Judith Tizard says, "I am delighted that Dr Te Paa and Ms May have agreed to serve on the Council".

"Both appointees have considerable governance experience in creative and cultural agencies and will bring valuable skills and knowledge to the Council's deliberations. I welcome their willingness to contribute to the government's major arts development organisation."

The purpose of Creative New Zealand is to encourage, promote and supports the arts in New Zealand for the benefit of all New Zealanders. The Arts Council is responsible for overall policy development and is the "public face" of the organisation. It guides the development of Creative New Zealand's three-year Strategic Plan, and determines funding for the Arts Board and Te Waka Toi.
