National endorses Eden Park upgrade plan
The National Party has strongly endorsed plans released today to upgrade Eden Park in preparation for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
National Party spokesman on Sport, Murray McCully, says he has been fully briefed by the Eden Park Trust Board and the Rugby Union, and strongly supports the proposal.
"When the World Cup Committee of the International Rugby Board was in New Zealand to make its initial assessment, I met them with Trevor Mallard to make it clear that both the Government and the alternative Government of New Zealand stood 100% behind New Zealand's World Cup bid. Now that we have won the hosting rights, it is essential that we have a venue in our largest city that is world-class.
"The plans that have been released today are ambitious but vital.
"In addition to ensuring a world-class event in 2011, they will provide infrastructure of lasting value to this region.
"National, therefore, supports the Eden Park Trust Board and the Rugby Union in their ambitious programme and offers bi-partisan support to the Government in their important role," says Mr McCully.
