NZEI's inflexibility no good for education
National's Industrial Relations spokesman, Wayne Mapp, says good teachers have nothing to fear from his Member's Bill, which seeks to introduce a 90-day probationary period for new employment relationships.
Dr Mapp says the NZEI's criticism of the bill is surprising from a union which already endorses probationary periods of two years before a new teacher can gain registration.
"Schools do not employ teachers with the intention of dismissing them. But I think parents would like to know that if their child's new teacher is a serious failure, schools and boards of trustees will have the power to ensure they do not remain at the head of the classroom."
