Police crime figures out today show a big jump in offences in Eastern Auckland, says the MP for Epsom and ACT Leader, Rodney Hide.
"We need to deal to crime - these figures reflect the huge public unease that crime is getting worse", Mr Hide said.
"Five people a day are victims of violent crime in East Auckland, while 36 dishonesty offences are reported every day.
"Sexual crime has increased 41.3% last year, with barely half resolved.
"Overall, violent crime rose by over a quarter in East Auckland in 2005, with property damage increasing 23.6% and drugs/antisocial crime rising 15%.
"East Auckland has the highest increase in crime anywhere in the Auckland district. It's no wonder that the people I speak to in Epsom don't feel safe in their homes or communities.
"Government's number one role is to keep Kiwis safe from thugs and thieves. Labour have completely failed - their spin that crime is decreasing is no longer believed by anyone - including Helen Clark's spin doctors who are working day and night trying to deny the obvious.
"Our Police do a good job, but they are often frustrated by a weak, revolving door justice system. We need sentences that fit the crimes.
"Our cops, courts and corrections services deserve to get the resources they need to keep law abiding Kiwis safe from thugs and thieves", Rodney Hide said.
