Scaremongering Out Of Place
It is unfortunate that the possibility of a flu pandemic is being used as an excuse for political point scoring says New Zealand First health spokesperson, Barbara Stewart MP.
“It is important to remember that if the worst did happen and a flu epidemic eventuated we would all be in it together and the community needs to be as well informed as possible about how to look after itself.
“Arguments about who should or should not have Tamiflu are an unnecessary distraction as a final decision may not be made until the exact nature of the virus has been confirmed. Depending on the numbers affected it is also possible that we would not have enough medical workers to visit those who are sick at home, said Mrs Stewart.
“Events in the past year have shown that natural disasters such as tsunami, earthquakes and hurricanes can also cause chaos. No matter where you live a level of community awareness about emergencies is vital.
“Constructive suggestions are always welcome but using the possibility of an epidemic to score political points is irresponsible, spreads unnecessary fears and in the long run is of no assistance to anyone,” said Mrs Stewart.
