Ignore bra objectors, says Carter

National’s Local Government spokesman, John Carter, says objectors to Cardrona Valley’s famous bra fence should be ignored.

He is commenting after legal advice that the brassiere-covered fence, which has become a tourist attraction, contravenes a rule of the Queensland Lakes District Council and the Resource Management Act, and requires resource consent.

“My advice to the council is to ignore the advice and the objectors and see if anyone is stupid enough to take this to the Environment Court.

“Haven’t we had enough of this PC rubbish?

“This is a perfect example of why we need to overhaul the RMA and laws under which this PC Clark/Peters Government expects local government to operate.

“If this issue has to be dealt with at local government level then central government has to look at what it expects local government to respond to.

“The farmer who owns the fence, John Lee, should have everyone’s support. All he did was let people put bras on his fence. He should be praised not penalised!

“It’s these quirky little things that make us New Zealanders and give small communities their own sense of identity – and that’s exactly what has happened in this case. We don’t want to take these things away from New Zealanders.

“We must get common sense back into everyday life. People who object to things like this should get a life and let the rest of us get on with ours,” Mr Carter says.
