Brash calls for TVNZ board to resign
National Party Leader Don Brash says the TVNZ board must resign if there is found to be any basis to the serious
allegations raised by Ian Fraser as he resigned.
Mr Fraser last night resigned as TVNZ's Chief Executive, saying that he had lost confidence in the politically appointed
board and that it needs to stand aside from the day-to-day running of TVNZ.
"Political interference is not only unethical, but unlawful as well. Urgent action must be taken to restore public
confidence in the state broadcaster.
"Such allegations are difficult to dismiss when they concern an organization appointed by Labour and including former
Labour Cabinet Minister and current Labour Party fundraiser, Dame Ann Hercus.
Dr Brash says he expects Broadcasting Minister Steve Maharey to initiate a full parliamentary inquiry into the goings on
at TVNZ, including whether the broadcaster is open to political interference and whether the current conflict between
the requirements of the market and the requirements of the charter can be resolved.
"If Labour does not launch such an inquiry, National will make full use of the select committee process to instigate a
full and wide-ranging inquiry."
